Playing the "Race Card" District 36

Return to Unpublished Letters/Articles
Press Release
Commissioner Mark Guns, has stooped to a new low in his bid to unseat incumbent Delegate Mike Smigiel in the District 36 House Race.  Guns' attack mailer pictures an African-American male, in dark shadow, with the words "To stop Crime Before it Happens."

"Mark Guns is clearly implying that the face of crime in our district is African American," said Smigiel, "It is appalling that he would racially profile so blatantly in this mailer.

The picture which also shows the African American male behind a fence with chains wrapped around his hands, is clearly meant to frighten citizens, and is at the least, tasteless, and the most, bigoted and racist.

"I can't believe that we still have this type of racist propaganda being sent out in this day and age.  Having an African American chained and behind a fence as the face of crime is just perpetuating negative stereotypes," said Delegate Smigiel, "and it has no place in our society."

Delegate Smigiel says that a person who would show such racial insensitivity, not only should be denied a seat in the legislature he should resign as Cecil County Commissioner.

Please see attached file to view the mailer.  Should you have any questions please contact me at my cell phone 410-920-0128.
